The Big News
Starting September 30, 2025, the IRS will no longer send refund checks in the mail. Nope, not even if you beg nicely. From now on, it’s direct deposit or prepaid card only.
Why the Breakup?
- Speed dating, IRS-style: Direct deposits land in days, not weeks.
- Security upgrade: No more refund checks mysteriously “lost” in the mail (ahem, cousin Larry).
- Budget-friendly: It’s cheaper for the government, which means fewer of our tax dollars wasted.
NJ Reality Check
Jersey homeowners: many of you use refunds to help cover massive property tax bills. If your account info isn’t updated, your refund could go into IRS limbo and leave you juggling bills like a circus act.
Example
Maria from Newark closed her bank account after filing. Her refund bounced back. Instead of Netflix and chill with her $2,300, she waited 6–8 weeks for the IRS to reissue. Don’t be Maria.
