October 15, 2024, Tax-Filing Deadline Approaches

As the October 15, 2024, tax-filing deadline fast approaches, the IRS is reminding taxpayers to file their 2023 federal income tax returns or request an extension to avoid penalties. Whether you’re filing electronically or need more time due to special circumstances, TaxZinger is here to help you navigate the process smoothly.

Who Qualifies for Extended Deadlines?

While the deadline for most taxpayers is October 15, the IRS is offering extended deadlines for individuals living in disaster areas, as well as military members serving in combat zones. If you’re in one of these special groups, you may have more time to file without any penalties.

Disaster-Area Taxpayers

If your address of record is in an area declared a disaster by FEMA, you could qualify for extra time to file. This includes taxpayers in parts of Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and West Virginia, who now have until November 1, 2024. Those in several other states and territories, including parts of Connecticut, Illinois, Puerto Rico, and more, have until February 3, 2025.

Helene Hurricane Relief

Taxpayers in areas affected by Hurricane Helene, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and neighboring states, now have until May 1, 2025, to submit their 2023 tax returns.

Military Members and Combat Zones

If you’re serving in a combat zone, you typically get 180 days after you leave the combat zone to file your returns and pay any taxes due. The IRS is committed to supporting military families, ensuring they have the time and tools they need to stay compliant.

Terrorist Attacks in Israel

Due to the recent events in Israel, affected taxpayers will have until September 30, 2025, to file their 2023 returns and pay any taxes due.

At TaxZinger, we work with clients in disaster zones and military families to help manage their tax situation with ease. If you’re eligible for these extensions, we can guide you through your options and ensure you remain compliant with IRS regulations.

Avoiding Penalties

Even with an extension, it’s important to file as soon as possible. Remember, an extension to file doesn’t mean an extension to pay. If you owe taxes, penalties and interest may accrue on any unpaid amounts after the original deadline.

Whether you need help filing your tax return before the October 15 deadline, or you qualify for one of the extensions, TaxZinger can provide expert tax preparation and planning services to ensure you’re covered. Let us handle the complexities so you can focus on what matters most—your life and business.
